Our Parish:

Sacred Heart Catholic Church is located at 722 N. Springfield St in Virden, Illinois. We are a parish in Northern Macoupin County within the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

Sacred Heart in Virden is part of a tri-parish unit under the pastoral care of Rev. James Palakudy - a Pallottine priest.  The other parishes within this unit are Holy Cross Parish in Auburn and St. Patrick Parish in Girard.

St. Catherine Church in Virden was founded in 1866 by German and Irish immigrants.  In the early 1900s, many Slovak immigrants moved to Virden in search of work in the coal mines of Virden and Thayer.  Sacred Heart Parish in Virden was chartered by these Slovak immigrants in 1912 and the church was built in 1914.  In 1916, the church was dedicated.  In 1978, St. Catherine Church was closed and the parish was merged with Sacred Heart.  In 2014, Sacred Heart Church celebrated its 100th anniversary with Mass and a parish dinner.  Today, Sacred Heart Parish is made up of about 145 families.

Vocations from Virden include three diocesan priests, three deacons and fourteen sisters.

We currently have a seminarian from our parish.

We are in our eleventh year of weekly 24 Hour Eucharistic Adoration.
